Is dental treatment safe during pregnancy is one of the most common questions asked by many of our patients…as pregnant patients are concerned about the developing baby so they are worried to undergo any dental treatment. many believe that doing any dental treatment during pregnancy is not safe but let us tell you that visiting your dentist during pregnancy is very essential for the mother and child as good oral hygiene is part of a healthy body as the mouth is a major gateway to various blood vessels and digestive system.

Why is dental care important during pregnancy?

During pregnancy, there are lots of hormonal changes and medication prescribed which increases the chances of periodontal disease and dry mouth, so it is advisable to brush and floss twice during pregnancy which shall also prevent cavities .morning sickness causing vomiting can cause erosion of teeth and poor oral hygiene may lead to benign growth also known as pregnancy tumour which is not serious but can be irritating.

When is it safe to undergo dental treatment for pregnant patients?

Dental treatment for pregnant patients is safe in all the trimesters but second trimester is the safest to undergo elective dental treatment. many believe avoiding dental treatment and dental cleaning may lead to periodontal disease which might cause preterm birth and preeclampsia. Many dentists believe doing dental treatment during the first trimester may cause miscarriage and henceforth delays dental care but we don’t recommend delaying any sort of dental treatment. But we also recommended regular dental checkup and taking the elective and necessary treatment.

 Is it safe to undergo dental treatment under local anaesthetics?

Local anaesthetics such as lidocaine and mepivacaine are safe during pregnancy but is always recommended to consult Ob/Gyn.

Are dental X-rays safe during pregnancy?

Nowadays digital radiographs have made radiation concerns almost negligible for diagnosis of dental disease but it’s always advisable for the pregnant patient to tell their respective dentist about pregnancy so he shall take all the required precautions before taking X-rays.

Medication to be taken during Pregnancy?

Acetaminophen can be taken for pain control and penicillin and amoxicillin are the safest drug during pregnancy. in addition to this cephalosporin such as cephalexin can also be taken.
